Golf

Golf, Sports Up CloseGolf is one of the fastest growing participations in the World and golfers are always looking for ways to hit a ball further and lower their handicap. The golf industry is always coming up with technological improvements in golf equipment, plus different gadgets to help us achieve this, however the average handicap for both men and women hasn’t dropped in the last 20 years!

Golfers are now realising that the clubs don’t play the game, the golfer does and the only way to decrease your handicap is to improve the function of the golfer. As in any sport, golf places specific demands on the body, i.e., a golf swing places such load on the body that it is the equivalent to a four repetition maximum in the gym. This means you can only lift a certain weight four times before you fatigue.

Golfers are now becoming more accustomed to the physical side of their training but a golfer may swing a club up to 60 times in a round and needs to realise that hitting balls is still the most important aspect of the training. By conditioning and achieving structural soundness the golfer will not only achieve their results but also pro-long their career.

Colchester United Ladies FC

Colchester United Ladies Football ClubI recently joined Colchester United Ladies Football Club as the Head of Strength & Conditioning. The purpose of me joining is to introduce a detailed strength and conditioning programme during the 2010/ 2011 season that will improve the overall performance and consistency of the team. We can then adapt and develop this programme for all following seasons.

Some of the benefits the players will experience will include an improvement or increase in all biomotor abilities. Biomotor ability is a term used to describe the various qualities of performance needed for particular activities. These are – Strength, Speed, Endurance, Flexibility, Power, Agility, Coordination and Balance.

One of the other advantages that the players can expect to achieve over a period of time through their structured training programmes (including practical skills training) is improved focus and motivation. The mental toughness needed when participating in varied physical training programmes will contribute to them gaining the ‘competitive edge’ and determination.

“Strength and Conditioning is the physical and physiological development of athletes for sporting performance. Strength and conditioning encompasses all forms of training to increase the sporting performance of an individual or team.”

Peak Performance Camps

Peak Performance CampsIn May 2010 DBPT teamed up with DNA Boot Camps to produce our Peak Performance Camps. These are sports specific training camp designed to take place with team sports clubs. Examples of these are sports such as Rugby, Football, Cricket and Hockey.

These camps are usually based on a 10 week programme with a 1hour session per week. Within the programme we carry out sports specific assessments on week’s 1, 5 and then finally 10 to see not only the starting point and but also the progression throughout. The courses are then adapted to target any of the team’s weaknesses that are highlighted within these assessments. These results are then passed on to the teams coaching staff to assist with further training.

There are a number of different drills that take place throughout the course depending on the sport we are targeting. These drills range from SAQ training (speed, agility, quickness) to warrior training (training using equipment such as kettlebells, tyres, and viprs amongst other things) and sprinting drills to inner circle training.

These courses have proved both beneficial and enjoyable with both instructors and participants really enjoying the 10 week process.
